I have been thinking about this question for some months, as the TPG acquisition of iiNet loomed. My problems are as follows:
Telstra = good customer service these days, but too expensive. Plus, it's Telstra and why would we want to support the incumbent telco to continue to be an 800 pound gorilla? The company has shown a remarkable propensity to screw customers over the years.
Optus = mini-Telstra, and flaccid in almost all ways. Not quite as evil, but not good by any measure.
TPG = a better option than it has ever been, but still suspicious. Has a reputation for poor customer service, it won't stand up on issues like Internet piracy, the Internet filter or data retention. It remains to be seen how the company will change iiNet -- for the better or for the worse. The situation is a bit unclear at the moment.
I haven't looked in detail at the smaller ISPs for a while -- it seems as though iiNet had bought up any of note. Who else should I be looking at? And who will you be recommending to people as their ISP from here on in, for a long-term contract?
I'm on TransACT FTTN (was iiNet, now TPG) in Canberra. There are no other FTTN options here, so I am now a TPG customer and will continue to be. But I'd like to know what other people will be recommending.
