Hmmm. I am just in the process of getting a NAS. In this case a 4 bay with -
2 x ethernet - can run combined ethernet connection for FAST transfers and upgradeable to 10 gigabyte ethernet
2 x USB 3
2 x USB 2
Feed it MAX ram for the below (8gig should work well)
Airplay - for Apple TV/Devices
Free to Air USB tuner in USB slot (Elgato Eye TV?) for streaming Free to Air TV - Record capability (PVR) in software. Legato make a 2 station receiver model.
Netflix????? Not sure
Virtual machines windows unix etc software
Email ( can be difficult because of ISP port blocking) using a NAS - plus plus plus - use those UNIX skills
The NAS is also a great backup and file sharing system for the family with the easy running of your own in house cloud services.
But ad a Apple Mini for EMAIl WEB Netflix server etc. ( I would suggest leaving the WEB services to a external provider and run my own email server via the mini.)
Add in Apple TV's as required (wait for the new ones)
Obtain a Static IP and crank up the NBN connection both ways.
Add a UPS for that nice shut down on power failure and perhaps a genset for 24hr up I would stop at the UPS.......:-)
Bit of an investment in $$$ and time but can be built in stages and would last a few years without major replacement.
Media - File - backup - cloud - web - mail plus more. Just whats needed for that new home based small business. The key is high speed (up/down) internet service.
Recommend APPLE routers throughout the dwelling with time machine as initial backup service.
Avoid the bits and pieces system. Plan it out for ALL the things you need want to do. More cost effective that way, especially as you are just starting out.
Put it all in a nice server cabinet and run some ethernet cable as required. SONAS make nice speakers and systems.
