OK. Here's an oddball topic for Friday Night Drinks.
If time and money were not an issue, which oddball technology would you travel to see? I don't mean go to MIT or Redmond - that is boring! Though you can give that answer if you want!
I would go to see the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. It has always fascinated me since its tragic explosion in 1986. In 86 I was a primary school kid in Melbourne and our class exercise was to write a newspaper report on it. There's a great youtube channel as well called bionerd23 where a German scientist goes to Chernobyl and takes samples and takes video of the inner wreckage. She sees the remains of firefighters' gear from 86! In some areas she has to don the whole suit to deal with lethal radiation. I wouldn't want to do that! But the standard, relatively safe tourist route where you see Reactor 4 from the outside would be amazing. The protective structure is still being built and it's still a blow up risk. Maybe at some point robots could go in deeper and do some clean up work.
I would be surprised if anyone wants to join me. I know. I am weird. But what a tragic example of technology gone so wrong. We will never know the full extent; Russian doctors were stopped from connecting symptoms to Chernobyl for the next 3 years. The number of "liquidators" will also never be known - that is people who went in unprotected as suicide missions to clean stuff up in 86 - because in 1989 that number was made classified for all time.
