I read a story on the ABC recently about a project to map the Southern Quadrant of our galaxy that will be shut down due to the CSIRO cuts unless they can crowdfund $65,000 by Christmas.
Blue sky science (which is scientific research in domains where "real-world" applications are not immediately apparent) is important because things like wifi and the Internet/www some examples of what can come from it.

"$74,295 pledged of $65,000 goal" They're home and hosed. Great to see. But I hope they get to the $85,000 stretch goal. Those wallpapers would be nice to add to my wallpaper slideshow.
